Maya Bay, Thailand, was closed to visitors on June 1, 2018 to allow for the restoration of its ecosystem. The bay was made famous by the 2000 film "The Beach" and had become a popular tourist destination, with as many as 5,000 visitors a day. The closure will allow for the recovery of coral reefs and marine life that have been damaged by over-tourism.
